Boy, 10, struck by lightning makes miracle recovery

A mother whose 10-year-old son survived a lightning strike in Oakville says it’s “a miracle” the boy is recovering so quickly.
A week ago, Mikey Franchetto was lying in the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto in serious condition after being struck by a lightning bolt while he played with friends behind a school.
“He was just moaning and groaning,” his mother, Beatriz Franchetto, said yesterday. “He was swollen up. His cheeks were swollen. His eyes were swollen and there were all kinds of tubes sticking into him.”
A few hours after he returned home from the hospital yesterday, Mikey was talking to visitors at the family’s home, just across the road from the school. He was planning to visit the school today to say thanks to classmates and teachers for their cards and kind wishes.
“To me, it’s a miracle,” his mother said. “It’s hard to believe it happened a week ago. They tell me not too many people survive something like this. I think he realizes he was lucky.”
She said her son does not recall anything about the lightning strike.
Authorities believe the bolt hit a fence or the ground before it hit the boy. Ms. Franchetto was in her basement when the lightning bolt hit. She said it sounded like a bomb going off.
