Cable Company Workers Rescue Boy From Pool

Published: June 14, 2005

Two cable company employees heard screams and rushed to rescue a 10-year-old boy who nearly drowned in an apartment complex pool in Des Moines on Monday, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reported.

The two employees of Comcast were leaving a job when they saw a woman waving and heard shouts for help. The found the boy in the pool.

“I went to look at the pool and there is child on the bottom, face down and not moving,” said Todd Hickam.

Hickam dove into the deep end of the pool and removed the boy. His co-worker, Ryan Thornhill, placed a call to 911 and gave the boy CPR.

“I think it hit me when I grabbed him and he was just limp and you knew he wasn’t breathing,” Thornhill said.

Seconds later, the boy began breathing again.

He was taken to Children’s Hospital in Seattle in critical condition. His condition was not available on Tuesday because of privacy laws.

Firefighters called the cable workers heroes.

“Had they not been where they were and answered the call when they did, I am certain the outcome would have been grim,” said Lt. Dave Mataftin of the Des Moines Fire Department.

Comcast gave Hickam and Thornhill the day off, with pay.
