Channel Crossing Teenagers Rescued from Dinghy
Published: June 13, 2005
Two teenagers who set sail for France in a small dinghy were rescued after their parents raised the alarm, coastguards said today.
A coastguard helicopter located the pair, both 18, nearly halfway across the Channel in the middle of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.
Lifeboats escorted them and their 18ft racing catamaran back to Sandown on the east coast of the Isle of Wight last night.
A Solent Coastguard spokesman said: “They appear to have not fully informed their parents what they were up to. We located them and brought them ashore.
“I am quite sure that had they discussed it with their parents and showed that they were prepared and everything it would have been OK.”
The two youths, from Sandown, were close to a commercial ship when they were found by the Lee-on-Solent coastguard helicopter at about 8pm yesterday.
