Coast Guard rescues 5

The Coast Guard rescued five Southwest Washington men from a 26-foot boat that sank Saturday morning in the Pacific off Astoria.
The Lotta Fun was nearly 13 miles west of the mouth of the Columbia River when the operator made a radio call for help at 8:45 a.m.
A helicopter from the Astoria Coast Guard station arrived at 9:18 a.m. and lowered a pump in an unsuccessful attempt to keep the Owens wooden-hulled boat afloat, said Bob Coster, Astoria Coast Guard station search and rescue controller.
The boat began taking on water after a hull board came loose, and it sank eight minutes after the Coast Guard arrived, Coster said.
The helicopter rescued two people, and a 47-foot motor lifeboat from the Cape Disappointment Coast Guard station picked up the other three. Everyone aboard was wearing a life jacket, and no one was injured, Coster said.
Coster identified the five as boat owner Brian Ott, 42, of Battle Ground; Eric Clark of Amboy; and Vancouver residents Richard Ott, Bradley Mayew and Harold Jones. Steve Mayes
