Children coif it up to help less fortunate

Published: June 11, 2005

For a special purpose, blondes, brunettes and red heads got their first hair cut in months inside St. Joseph Elementary School’s library Friday afternoon.

Eleven students from St. Joseph’s decided early on in the year that they would like to donate their locks to Locks of Love, not-for-profit organization that describes its mission as providinghairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under the age of 18 with medical hair loss as a result of radiation treatment, burns, chemotherapy or a condition called alopecia areata.

Donors are asked to grow their hair long enough to donate at least 10 inches. The hair is then bagged and shipped off to Locks of Love in Florida where it is assembled into a hair piece.

“They’re going to be making a wig out of this,” said Faith Martin, a student with really “big” hair. “It’s going to be nice and short.”

Martin’s younger sister Lilly, was one of the first girls to cut away her curly locks.

“I don’t remember the last time I had a hair cut,” Lilly said. “It feels really short.”

Like her sister, Lilly’s hair had been growing since early September when the school sent out permission slips to the entire school.

Students interested in participating had to sign a contract stating that they would not cut their hair until the end of the 2005-06 school year, said Mary Lynn Gagnon, a St. Joseph parent.

Gagnon’s daughter, Grace, sat in the barber seat, her hair pushed in front of her eyes.

“She’s been growing her hair for almost two years,” Gagnon said about her daughter.

Grace said that growing her hair for Locks of Love made her feel happy and she thinks the child who receives her hair as a wig will think it’s pretty awesome.

Eyes went cross-eyed when each girl held up her detached ponytail of hair to examine. Parents remarked on the shorter hairstyle and quickly took pictures.

The girls received their haircuts from Cost Cutter Salons hairdressers who volunteered their time for the cause.
