Woman Rescued from High Waters

Published: June 9, 2005

A Kenyon woman says it “definitely was a miracle” that she’s alive after floodwaters swept her off the road.

Mona Boomgaarden was driving home last night from Carlton College in Northfield, where she works, when the water came up and washed her car off the road.

Boomgaarden says her car went dead, but suddenly the dome light came on, the window rolled down and she was able to get out of the car.

Boomgaarden can’t swim, but says she “just went with the current.” After trying and failing to grab a tree, she was able to steer herself to a fence post and hang onto it.

Boomgaarden screamed for help, and her husband Dwight directed rescuers to her.

A man, meanwhile, is missing from that area after heavy rains caused flooding on the Zumbro River in southeastern Minnesota.

Rescuers are scheduled to resume the search for a 47-year-old Hayfield man whose missing after his pickup also was swept off the road. The man was heading to work in Cannon Falls when he disappeared. Firefighters found his pickup early Wednesday.
