Pastor with Kidney Problem Believes Faith Healed Him

Some call him a walking miracle. A man cheated death last year, nearly drowning, while saving three people. A heroic act that doctors told him caused serious damage to his kidneys, but News 4 WOAI found out Wednesday, doctors may soon give him a clean bill of health.
Last year, at a church picnic on the Medina River, Pastor Jose Rodriguez jumped in to pull three people from the water.
“I was overcome with water,” Rodriguez said. He was pulled under, and doctors said he was without oxygen so long he suffered severe permanent damage to his kidneys.
“At worst, I was supposed to get a kidney transplant,” Rodriguez said, but he refused. Rodriguez said he did not want a transplant or even dialysis.
“I said, ‘I need to know what I’m fighting and let me pray,’” Rodriguez said. A year later, Rodriguez’s kidney has completely healed.
“I’m back to 100 %,” Rodriguez said, and he believes his faith healed him.
“I know I can’t die,” Rodriguez said. “I have too many things to do.”
Rodriguez said he dropped out of Lanier, and as a teen, his life was filled with drugs and alcohol. But now, he says God is using his past to fuel his spiritual future, and help people on the west side.
“He brought me out of there,” Rodriguez said. “He can take other people out, and change their lives and transform them as well.”
It is a mission Rodriguez says was brought to the surface by near death experiences and unexplainable healing.
“I believe that’s the only reason I’m alive today,” Rodriguez said. “I should have died many times over and the only reason why I’m alive today is to be able to make difference.”
Rodriguez will see a doctor in the coming weeks, and if his blood tests show no problems, he will be released by his doctors.
