Mum’s relief over 100 ft. ‘miracle’ fall girl
Published: June 9, 2005
A relieved mum has spoken for the first time of her “miracle” girl - who survived a 100ft plunge from Scotland’s tallest railway bridge.
Kimberley Arnott, 12, struck several trees on the way down, breaking her fall from the towering Millheugh Viaduct in Larkhall, Lanarkshire.
As first revealed by the Weekend Times on Saturday the accident happened around 1.15pm on Friday.
The 1st year pupil at Larkhall Academy broke her back and suffered serious injuries to her arm and leg, but is expected to walk again.
As Kimberley recovered in the spinal unit of Glasgow’s Southern General Hospital, her mum Irene said: “She is a miracle girl - there is no other way to describe it. We are just thanking our lucky stars she is still with us.
“We were told that if it was not for the trees, she would not be here.
“She broke her back, shattered her elbow and crushed the tendons in her leg. But she will recover from the injuries.
“I asked someone to demonstrate to me how high 100 feet was - and when they showed me I wished I had never asked.”
Police are probing the incident on the disused railway bridge.
The giant structure which crosses the River Avon has long proved a magnet for local children.
Irene wants it to be pulled down, but she claims that conservationists believe it to be of historic value.
