Police officer rescues men from fire
Published: June 8, 2005
At 1:36 a.m. on June 4, while on patrol Cst. Bret Davis of the Quinte West Detachment came across a house fire at 97 Dundas St. E. Trenton Ward. Cst. Davis notified the Communications Center of the fire, then entered the house and rescued one of the occupants from the main floor living room.
He re-entered the house and rescued a second male from that same room.
The first male advised that there was another male in the house sleeping in a second floor bedroom. Cst. Davis and Cst. Hugh Robinson entered the house in an attempt to rescue the third occupant.
As the officers made their way to the second floor they were unable to complete the rescue and were overcome by the smoke.
By this time the Quinte West Fire Department arrived on scene and completed the rescue of the third resident and the 14 year old family pet dog, “Pepper”.
Both officers were treated at Trenton Memorial Hospital for smoke inhalation and later released.
The third occupant rescued from the house was admitted to Trenton Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening affects due to smoke inhalation.
Pepper was treated at the scene by EMS attendant Troy Ward, oxygen was provided to the dog.
It was due to Ward’s efforts that the dog survived.
Pepper was taken to the Quinte Animal Hospital and later released, no worse for wear.
Having the fire dispatch in the Quinte West OPP Detachment expedited the fire response.
Faye Thomas, the fire dispatcher on duty, was monitoring the police radio when fire response was requested.
She dispatched the fire fighters prior to receiving the request from Smiths Falls Communications Centre.
This quick response contributed to saving the life of the third occupant.
