Charity Recruits 100,000 Volunteers
Published: June 8, 2005
Nationwide volunteering charity TimeBank was celebrating today after reaching a landmark milestone.
A total of 100,000 volunteers have now offered their free time to good causes through the award-winning charity.
Chief executive, Moira Swinbank, said: “TimeBank’s message has always been that you get more out than you put in – whether it’s boosting your career, improving your health or helping you find new passions and interests.
“Being able to celebrate our 100,000th time-giver just shows that our campaigns are sending out the right messages and inspiring people to volunteer.”
The award-winning volunteering charity was set up in 2000 to encourage people to volunteer in their communities by matching their passions, skills and lifestyles with suitable volunteering opportunities.
In 2004, TimeBank was named in the Guardian top 100 useful websites. TimeBank is also helping to deliver the Year of the Volunteer 2005, an initiative which highlights volunteering opportunities throughout the UK.
TimeBank has expanded its services in the last two years to work with other charities, helping them to recruit more diverse volunteers.
Samaritans, Marie Curie and The National Association of Hospital and Community Friends (NAHCF), have all enlisted TimeBank’s expertise to recruit new volunteers.
NAHCF teamed up with TimeBank on the “BeSurprised.org” media campaign aimed at attracting younger people to volunteering in hospitals.
NAHCF chief executive, David Wood, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the success of this creative campaign and to date have placed over 440 volunteers in hospitals with NAHCF groups across the UK.
“It is a great testament to partnership working that TimeBank’s 100,000th registered volunteer has come through our Be Surprised campaign and is now a much needed hospital volunteer.”
