Grade 6 student raises funds for Cancer Society

Published: June 7, 2005

With the warmer weather upon us, Thunder Ferguson, a Grade 6 student at Spring Valley Public School, decided it was time to have a hair cut, and all for two good causes. Since July of 2004, Thunder has been growing his hair in hopes that he could make a difference in someone’s life.

After a trip to Toronto Sick Kids Hospital where he saw kids his own age suffering the effects of chemotherapy, he asked his mom Betty Ann if there was anything he could do to help.

“I was at Toronto Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto,” said Thunder at a special school assembly on Tuesday, May 31, 2005. “I saw some very sick kids fighting cancer. I wanted to help them win their fight so I decided to raise money to help find a cure for cancer.”

Upon hearing that he could help by joining with the Canadian Cancer Society and raising money to have his hair cut, he got growing, gearing up not only to raise money, but to donate his hair to Angel Hair for Kids.

“I encouraged him to do this,” said Betty Ann. “And yes, I’m very proud of him.”
Fifty per cent of the $4,075.59 he raised will go toward cancer research, while 42 per cent funds community programs such as the transportation service, six support groups, and a new telephone support program which matches people of similar backgrounds and circumstances from across the country.

“There were 6,433 separate trips bringing people for cancer treatments last year,” said Matthew Del Grosso of the Canadian Cancer Society. “These trips, even though we have a dedicated and committed group of volunteer drivers, still cost about $150,000.”
