12 Reunited: 67 years later, she rounded up first-graders
Published: June 7, 2005
There were 34 students in the 1938 first-grade class of Granite Falls Elementary School. Seventeen are still living.
Bobbie Bumgarner managed to get 12 of them together for a reunion at Sims Country BarBQue.
Bumgarner, 74, enjoys a keen memory of classmates and a knack for organization.
A copy of the original class photo was passed around to surviving classmates still in the area.
“We just thought we ought to have a get-together,” she said. “It’s a unique idea, but we wanted to follow through on it.”
Classmates decided if anyone could round the former first-graders up for one night, it was Bobbie.
“I’m like the Yellow Pages,” she said. “I made a lot of phone calls.”
Bumgarner wants to arrange another reunion.
“We all enjoyed it,” shesaid. “We ate, took pictures and reminisced. I can’t wait until next year.”
Here are her thoughts on other topics:

“Be yourself. Live one day at a time, and do the best you can.”
What would people be surprised to learn about you?
“I’m an open book. I tell everything.”
Who is your hero, and why?
“Two high school teachers, Willie Earl Bolick and Edith Cagle. I still look up to them, and they still mean a lot to me.”

“A cuddly dog, jumping up and down with joy.”
If you could spenda day with anyone, living or dead, who would it be, and why?
“It would be my husband (Bobby “Bob” Hugh Bumgarner). He died eight years ago. I want to catch up with him.”
Some people have bumperstickers that read, “I’d rather be sailing.” What would your bumpersticker read?
“I’d rather be communicating with friends, talking.”
