“Rescued” otter pup doing fine at Point Defiance Zoo
Published: June 3, 2005
A sea otter pup “rescued” over the holiday weekend by campers who thought the animal was struggling in the surf is doing well at Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium.
The otter pup is a male, two or three weeks old and weighs less than four pounds, zoo spokeswoman Carolyn Cox said. The pup requires 24-hour care for feedings.
The otter was found on a beach near La Push. Federal agents are investigating because removing the pup violated state and federal law and Olympic National Park rules. Sea otters are endangered in Washington.
People who find what appear to be abandoned sea otters or seal pups should leave them alone and give their mothers a chance to retrieve them, said Steve Jeffries of the state Fish and Wildlife Department.
Cox said wildlife officials are trying to find a rehabilitation center for the pup because of the care it needs. It will have to spend the rest of its life in captivity.
