Father reunited with children after carjacking

Published: June 3, 2005

A father was reunited with his young sons after his van was carjacked with the children inside. Police are searching for the suspects and the vehicle.

The children were with their 24-year-old father as he delivered newspapers early this morning in Berwyn. When he got out of the van to make a delivery on Oak Park Avenue and 26th Street someone else got in and took off. Both the six-month-old and two-year-old were found within an hour on the street by a Good Samaritan near the Greyhound bus station in Chicago.

“On offender basically carjacked or took over the week as they were delivering papers near the 7-Eleven. The victims called the police department along with some other neighbors, I believe, and the vehicle was last seen taking off towards Oak Park Avenue,” said Scott Waguespack, Berwyn mayor’s office.

The boys were reunited with their father before being taken to Mercy Hospital to be checked out.

Police in Berwyn are still looking for the suspect who carjacked the vehicle. They describe the suspect as a male around 30 years of age, 5-foot-10 and may be driving a red 1992 Astro van with temporary tags. Any information should be forwarded to the Berwyn police station.
