Boise Man Claims $220 Million Lottery Jackpot

Published: May 31, 2005

A Boise man has come forward with the winning Powerball ticket worth $220.3 million, a record jackpot for Idaho and the 10th largest prize ever awarded by the multi-state lottery.

Idaho Lottery Commission director Roger Simmons said they are not releasing the man’s name yet, but that he is a Boise resident in his thirties who had been playing the same numbers the last four years.

He bought his winning ticket Saturday at Jackson’s Food Store on Orchard Street in central Boise.

That’s the same store that almost ten years ago to the date sold an $87 million winning ticket, the previous record jackpot in Idaho.

Simmons says the Boise man brought the ticket to state lottery headquarters yesterday afternoon only an hour after he went into another convenience store and realized he had won the Powerball jackpot.

Simmon said the man was still in shock.

The winning ticket has been verified by the lottery, but the man wanted to wait to turn it in for processing until he decides whether to receive the full lottery jackpot of more than $220 million over the next 30 years or take a one-time payout of $125 million.

If he takes the payout, lottery officials estimate he’ll pocket $84 million after state and federal taxes.
