Alex’s Lemonade is set up for charity

On Belmont Stakes Day, June 11, Calder will set up two ”Alex’s Lemonade Stands” with all contributions going toward the pediatric cancer research at Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital in Hollywood.
Alexandra ”Alex” Scott was the 8-year-old founder of Alex’s Lemonade Stand for Pediatric Cancer Research. Two days before her first birthday, she was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an aggressive childhood cancer.
At the age of 4, Alex decided to do something to make a cure more likely.
She opened her first lemonade stand in July 2000 with the idea of donating the proceeds to “her hospital.”
On Aug. 1, 2004, Alex passed away. Before her death, she set a donations goal of $5 million for this year.
At Pimlico Race Course last Saturday, when Afleet Alex captured the Preakness Stakes, the middle jewel of horse racing’s Triple Crown, Alex’s Lemonade Stands made $18,000 in donations.
The Pennsylvania-based charity had collected almost $11,000 earlier this month at the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.
Afleet Alex’s trainer Tim Ritchey said, “I hope we can get what we want accomplished on Belmont day and that is to have a lemonade stand at every racetrack that runs that day.”
