Cat up tree back home after rescue

Published: May 27, 2005

A 3-year-old cat stuck high in a neighbor’s tree for two days was recently returned to his owner.

Spanky, a white and gray domestic short-hair, escaped about 10 days ago from his home at 800 Bendermere Ave. and climbed up an oak tree at Marie Madden’s yard at 912 Bendermere Ave.

“The cat was crying all day,” Madden said. “It was really nervous.”

After her family’s attempts to lure the cat down were unsuccessful, Madden called the Monmouth County SPCA in Eatontown. Guy Little, a Long Branch animal cruelty investigator and animal control officer who covers Ocean Township, came to assess the situation.

Officer Jim Kennedy climbed 40 feet up the tree, but couldn’t reach Spanky.

Madden said she received a call from Township Manager David R. Kochel, who offered to dispatch a firetruck or call a tree service if Madden would pay for it. Madden declined, saying, “It wasn’t even my cat.”

Finally, on May 19, Loretta Windas, assistant to the director at the SPCA, called in Kelly Barone, a professional tree climber. SPCA workers set up a rescue net before Barone reached high in the tree and coaxed Spanky to him.

“The cat has been screaming and crying, clinging desperately to a limb for two days now,” Windas said. “It was hungry, tired and thirsty.”

The cat was brought to a shelter, Windas said, and a microchip in his body identified him as Spanky and showed he was adopted by the Terranova family about two years ago.

The shelter called Millie Terranova, who ran out in her pajamas and drove to the shelter. Spanky was soon curled up in her bed.

“I’m glad he was safe,” said Terranova. She said the family had been looking for him.

“I am glad to have him home. He’s very big part of the family.”
