Rochester woman receives Volunteer Service Award

Published: May 25, 2005

George-Ann Schauffele has been a dedicated volunteer for more than 20 years at Literacy Volunteers of Rochester, Inc. Schauffele’s dedication to functionally illiterate adults earned her a nod from President Bush during his visit to Rochester, garnering her the Presidential Volunteer Service Award.

Schauffele was one of a handful of local dignitaries who greeted President Bush as he stepped off Air Force One at the Greater Rochester International Airport this morning. She is one of more than 400 volunteers President Bush has met with across the country since the award was established in March 2002.

Schauffele tutors functionally illiterate adults in basic reading and English language skills and works with immigrants and refugees in the English for Speakers of Other Language (ESOL) program. Shauffele is a certified tutor trainer and conducts workshops to improve reading teaching methods.
