Major Men’s Health Breakthrough Announced

Published: May 24, 2005

Seven years after Viagra revolutionized the bedroom and the pharmaceutical industry, the American Urology Association was told at its annual scientific meeting today that a new drug, dapoxetine, being developed shows promise in treating premature ejaculation, the number one male sexual problem in the world, 1200 WOAI news reported.

The drug is called dapoxetine hydrochloride, and Dr. Jon L. Pryor of the University of Minnesota says a large study of men taking the drug noticed ’significant improvements in sexual function, including ejaculatory control, and satisfaction with sexual intercourse for men and their partners.’

“It is estimated that premature ejaculation affects 27 to 34 percent of men across all age ranges, in contract to erectile dysfunction, which is estimated to affect 10 to 12 percent of all men, usually those older in age,” Pryor said.

“You have to realize this causes a lot of distress and is a really bad thing for a lot of couples.”

Also unlike erectile dysfunction, which is treated with Viagra and a range of other drugs which have come onto the market since the efficacy of sidenefil based drugs was demonstrated at the AUA’s 1998 scientific session, premature ejaculation effects men of all ages, and can continue throughout an entire lifetime.

Currently, although there are some unapproved traditional therapies sold, Pryor said there is no FDA approved drug specially approved for premature ejaculation. He says patients are currently treated through psychiatry and behavior modification techniques.

“Patients are extremely reluctant to talk about the condition with their partners or health care professionals,” Prior said. “It can have a significant impact on many aspects of a man’s life. It can affect his ability to maintain relationships both sexual and non sexual, and can impact a man’s general sense of self confidence.”

Dapoxetine hydrochloride is being developed by ALZA Corporation of Mountain View California, and will be marketed by Ortho McNeil Pharmaceutical of Raritan New Jersey, a unit of Johnson & Johnson.

Prior said dapoxetine does not yet have a trade name. He said the drug has been submitted for approval to the Food and Drug Administration, and approval is expected within the coming 12 months.

He said more research has to be done on dapoxetine, specifically its efficacy on men of all racial and ethnic backgrounds.

“Some 80 percent of the men in my study were Caucasian,” he said, adding that the urological make up of men worldwide is similar and he anticipates the results will be similar.

“These results are compelling,” Prior said. “They demonstrate that, for the first time, a medicine, dapoxetine, can be taken by men on an on demand basis and provide significant improvement in their premature ejaculation condition.”

Premature ejaculation was defined as ‘persistent or recurrent ejaculation sooner than desired either before or shortly after penetration.

Prior said most of the men in his study had a time of 40 seconds or less, and use of depoxetine increased that to an average of four minutes. The time was measured by the men’s female partners using a stopwatch.

“I’m not sure how dapoxetine will be marketed,” Prior joked, “but I am confident dapoxetine will not be sold with a stopwatch.”
