Trapped 12 rescued after six days

Published: May 23, 2005

Twelve workers trapped in a collapsed railway tunnel for six days in south-west China were pulled out alive today, state media reported.

The workers were shown on China Central Television with their eyes covered by black cloth being stretchered out of the tunnel in Qujing, Yunnan province.

Some walked out unaided, despite their ordeal.

They had been trapped since last Tuesday after the tunnel caved in.

Rescuers drilling to find them made contact last Wednesday through a ventilation pipe and managed to send milk to keep them alive, Xinhua news agency said.

They had to dig about 55m deep before lifting the first victim out of the pit this morning. The remaining 11 were rescued soon after.

“It’s faster than we expected,” a rescuer told Xinhua. “We estimated we would have to dig at least 62m.”

It was not clear what caused the tunnel to collapse although slack safety procedures are routine throughout China.
