Fishermen rescued after boat sinks

Published: May 23, 2005

Two fishermen were rescued off the San Mateo coast after their 17-foot power boat sank suddenly.

The men, wearing life vests, clung to a breakwater near the Coyote Point Marina in San Mateo for about 45 minutes until they were rescued by Coast Guard helicopter.

They were lifted separately into the aircraft by basket. One of the men was treated at a local hospital for hypothermia, said Acting San Mateo Fire Department Battalion Chief Chris Cilia.

Officials hadn’t determined by late Sunday why the boat sank.

The dramatic rescue came a day after a Coast Guard helicopter plucked two young girls from rocks at San Francisco’s Ocean Beach. They had become stranded by the tide.
