Winning Lottery Ticket Returned To Rightful Owner
Published: May 20, 2005
A winning lottery ticket was back in the hands of its rightful owner Friday, but the store that sold the ticket is out of luck.
NewsCenter 5’s Diolinda Vaz reported that after a short nightmare, Betty Gelederes’ lottery dream finally came true.
“I’d like to thank the lottery for doing the right thing,” she said.
Her Cash Winfall picks won her $32,000 after taxes. But when Gelederes first cashed in the ticket, she said the clerk at the Richdale store told her she only won $2. Police said the clerk kept her ticket and cashed it in.
“We’re very pleased to be able to recognize the rightful owner,” said Massachusetts Lottery Commission Executive Director Joe Sullivan.
Gelederes’ lucky numbers are her children’s birthdays.
“I’m glad I won. Sad I had to win like this,” she said.
Lottery officials have suspended the store’s lottery license.
