Businessman donated $1 million toward children’s hospital
Published: May 19, 2005
A businessman who said he wanted to share his good fortune with others has made the largest donation in the history of University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina’s Children’s Hospital.
Ashley Turner, a licensed Free Will Baptist minister and owner and president of Garner-based Ashley Turner Homes, donated $1 million Tuesday afternoon to the Pitt County children’s hospital.
“I felt like I was led into making a contribution,” Turner said. “I felt like the Lord was telling me this is what I needed to do.”
The money will help fund a $6 million Kids Immunosuppressed Special Unit at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. The hospital needs an additional $2 million for the project.
KISSU will provide children with a germ-free environment, but with room to play and visit with their families. The protection is vital for children fighting aggressive cancers, Dr. Ronald M. Perkins said.
“I’ve never come close to seeing anything like this,” said Perkins, medical director for the Children’s Hospital. “I’m coming from Southern California, and I’ve never seen an individual make a donation like this.”
The Children’s Miracle Network has donated $500,000 each year to the project since 2002. The proposed 12-bed unit will care for some of the sickest children in the region with diseases like cancer and sickle cell anemia.
No construction date has been set.
