Fortune cookies produce real fortunes

Published: May 13, 2005

New York Powerball lottery officials suspected fraud when 110 people got five out of six numbers right in the March 30th drawing.
The fluky drawing cost the multi-state lottery 19 (m) million dollars in unexpected payouts. Winners got 100-thousand to 500-thousand dollars.

But it wasn’t fraud. It was the fortune cookies. Won Ton Food in New York City packages four (m) million of them a day, each bearing a paper fortune and six lucky numbers. The company ships to Chinese restaurants all over the country.

Won Ton vice president Derrick Wong says he was shocked, but delighted.

The company chooses the numbers by hand, but by the end of the year, a computer will select them randomly.
