Charity Behind Mystery Posters

Published: May 11, 2005

A charity dedicated to promoting the bible has today revealed it is the organisation behind a mysterious poster campaign that has challenged the people of Bristol to vote on a series of dilemmas.

The Bible Society’s “EastEnders” media campaign has been the talk of the city over recent weeks as eye-catching posters aimed to highlight the relevance of the Bible to the struggles, choices and emotions of everyday life.

The mysterious adverts, which featured on billboards and in bus shelters, have asked local people to discuss, debate and even to vote on EastEnders plots.

Residents who saw the striking magenta coloured adverts were invited to register “yes” or “no” votes, either by text or via the campaign website at www.getthestory.co.uk

Organisers hoped the campaign would highlight that Bible stories and themes, which include love, trust and forgiveness, are often depicted in many of today’s soap operas and have a modern-day context linked to everyday lives.

Rob Cotton, Bible Society campaign officer, said: “The Bible Society’s poster campaign asks fundamental questions of each one of us.

“When we stop and think about the storylines in soap operas like EastEnders, they are exploring themes which are explored in the Bible.

“The campaign challenges us all to consider how the Bible’s message can connect with our everyday lives.”

To support the media advertising, and to talk about the issues raised, a season of events exploring culture, life and spirituality is now being promoted.

The Kaleidoscope campaign will offer a whole range of imaginative ways to explore the Bible’s relevance today. These include a short season of films at the Watershed Cinema; a new circus production based on a Bible story by the Bristol-based circus school Circomedia; and a public debate at the Council House with key city leaders entitled What is the state of democracy in Bristol?

In all, more than 80 events will run between now and June 8 giving the public opportunities to explore the ideas behind the media campaign.
