Two Chicago-area men cited as heroes

Published: May 8, 2005

Two Chicago-area men have been honored with Carnegie Hero medals, perhaps the nation’s most prestigious civilian award for heroism. Nationwide, only 18 such medals were awarded this year by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission.
And oddly, both Illinois men were honored for rescuing women from oncoming trains.

Last year, 56-year-old Thomas Rutecki of Downers Grove was crossing the railroad tracks on his way to work in Chicago when he pulled a woman from a stalled electric scooter — saving her from a speeding train.

The area’s other hero, 60-year-old Douglas Peterson of Maple Park in Kane County, pulled a 90-year-old woman from her car after it stopped on railroad tracks.

Peterson, who is disabled and has trouble moving around himself because of a brain aneurysm, said he believes his act was only made possible through divine assistance.
