Students Volunteer to Clean

Published: May 8, 2005

Some local college kids are taking it upon themselves to make Cedar Rapids a better and cleaner place, at least from one point of view.

Mary Klopp’s apartment is the 5th and final stop for two Mount Mercy College coeds. Freshman Jayne Dvorak said, “It’s really nice to serve other people and get out and help some of the residents here.”

They volunteered to spend their Saturday cleaning windows. But it is more than just cleaning. They are getting beyond the surface by helping people who would not necessarily be able to do the cleaning on their own.

Klopp said, “If it was 15 years ago or 10 years ago, I would have had that done myself.” Ten years ago and Klopp would have been 75 years old.

Now at 85, it is easy to see in her face how much she enjoys the help and company. Klopp said, “We look forward to this. We hope they don’t stop.”

Mount Mercy has been recruiting college students for this kind of volunteer work for about a decade.

There is no stopping them now.
