Over 150 Northwest students took part in Volunteer Week
Published: May 6, 2005
More than 150 Northwest Missouri State University students participated in university-sponsored National Volunteer Week activities last month, contributing over 300 hours of service to the Maryville community.
Individual students and members of 21 campus organizations spent the week helping out at local residential care facilities, repairing trails at Robertson Crist Nature Park, walking dogs at the Nodaway Humane Society, reading books to Horace Mann Laboratory School students and babysitting youngsters during a parents’ night out.
Other activities included a clean-up day during which students performed yard work and household chores for senior citizens. Volunteers also spent time at the Children and Family Center and picked up litter along highways “adopted” by various campus organizations.
Joe Gaa, Northwest’s coordinator of volunteerism and service learning, called the week-long emphasis on community service a success and is already making plans for a similar event next year.
“I think it’s great that so many of our kids participated,” Gaa said. “We have a very caring student body at Northwest and a caring university family in general. This shows that our students understand that a big part of their education is learning to serve others while working for the greater good of the community.”
