Charleston teen grows, then cuts his hair for Locks of Love
Published: May 5, 2005
Stylist Joyce Luedke worked for several minutes with her scissors Tuesday afternoon before pronouncing, “There is a kid underneath that hair.”
The “kid” in question, 13-year-old Garrett Goben of Charleston, arrived at the American Beauty Hair Studio with shaggy brown hair that could be stretched out to about 12 inches in length.
Garrett left behind his long hair at the studio as a donation to Locks of Love, a national organization that uses donated hair to provide free hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 who are suffering from long-term medical hair loss.
More than a year ago, Garrett started to grow his hair out after his grandmother, Bernadette Hopkins of Lake Geneva, Wis. was diagnosed with cancer. She passed away in December.
Garrett remained determined to make his donation despite being hot during the warm times of the year and encountering other inconveniences that resulted from having mountainous hair.
