Meals on Wheels honors community volunteer

Published: May 4, 2005

For nearly 20 years, Gordon Dixon has been serving up a plate of compassion, one stop at a time.

The Columbia resident was named the Meals on Wheels Volunteer of the Year for Richland County by Senior Resources Inc.

Dixon became involved with Meals on Wheels in the early 1980s before his retirement. He was influenced by his wife, Elizabeth Dixon, who has been delivering meals for 27 years.

Deborah L. Bower, executive director of Senior Resources noted that community volunteers like the Dixons saved the Meals on Wheels program more than $209,140 in 2004.

“That’s money that was used to purchase meals, which means more people were able to receive a hot lunch,” Bower said.
