Fishermen rescued after 19 days adrift

Published: April 11, 2005

On March 23 a ship went missing after it sailed into the South China Sea off the coast of the Philippines’ Luzon island. Apparently the ship ran out of fuel and went adrift.

The Philippines Government sought the help of the US Pacific Command to locate the fishermen. A US navy aircraft finally found them and directed the Philippines navy to the location so the four men aboard could be picked up.

They were 800 km. from where they had set off.

The men said they survived by eating raw squid caught from the sea, and by drinking from the boat’s supply of radiator water.
