Others brag for humble volunteer
Published: March 21, 2005
To say the least, Sarah Rajasekhar is modest.
Thank goodness it wasn’t up to her to apply for a District Volunteer Award she recently received from the Eau Gallie Women’s Club.
Rajasekhar never would have sought the recognition. Volunteer work, she said, comes from the heart.
That’s exactly why she was chosen as Volunteer of the Year for District 6, said Jo Crittenden, president of the Eau Gallie Women’s Club.
“We chose Sarah because she is so unselfish and gives so much to everyone,” Crittenden said. “She’s very modest and believes she doesn’t deserve this but she does.”
Being named District 6 volunteer means Rajasekhar goes to Orlando in April to compete against other statewide volunteers. The final winner will be chosen by the Florida Federation of Women’s Clubs.

QUESTION: With what local causes are you involved?
ANSWER: The Cancer Care Centers of Brevard — founded by my brother Dr. Silas Charles — recently held a fund-raiser for tsunami victims and, in 2004, a Taste of India dinner raised $22,000 for Brevard County hurricane victims. At these events, I helped to set up food service and receive people.
Q: You also do volunteer work abroad?
A: In India, I assisted my family in establishing Hope Village as a home to care for children who are either orphans or come from very poor families. I also worked to help establish the Christian Cancer Center in India, which helps indigent cancer patients. My church, St. Timothy Lutheran Church, is a main supporter.
Q: What kind of work do you do at local hospitals and nursing homes?
A: I visit patients at Holmes Regional and Wuesthoff medical centers, taking them food and listening to them talk. I want to give patients some company, and that gives me satisfaction because I know they feel lonely at times.
Q: Have you always been a volunteer?
A: I actually worked at Health First until 12 years ago as a cytotechnologist before quitting to volunteer full-time with the Cancer Care Center in Melbourne and Christian Cancer Center in India.
Q: Do you often travel to India?
A: I’ve gone every year for the past 16 years. God gave me the time and energy. This year I’m going to India in July with two members from my church. We’ll spend six weeks there helping children at the orphanage.
