Boys rescued from mudflats

Published: March 20, 2005

Two young boys had to be rescued today after becoming stuck in the mud while exploring the Cairns esplanade at low tide today.
The boys became firmly wedged in mudflats off the esplanade, in the far north Queensland tourist city, after venturing out to read a sign.

A Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) spokeswoman said emergency crews received a triple-0 call about 3.41pm (AEST).

“When they did get there, there was a little person caught up to his chest, a friend was with him, and they (QFRS) took a board out with a line attached to it and got the kids to grab on to that,” she said.

“When they got them out, they hosed them down to get the stinky mud off them and then the police brought them back home.”

One of the boys was quickly plucked to safety but officers had to dig a little deeper before the other was eventually freed.
