Espey sacrifices hair for Locks of Love

Published: March 19, 2005

Meggie Espey, 15, a Claremore High School sophomore, donated much of her thick, dark hair to Locks of Love, a nonprofit organization that uses donated hair to create prosthetics for children who have lost hair due to long-term illness.

Espey grew out her hair for about four years in preparation for donating it; hair must be 10 inches from where it is cut in order to be accepted.

Espey, whose grandfather died of leukemia, found out about Locks of Love when she saw in a yearbook that a classmate had donated hair to the organization.

“It just hit one day,” Espey said. “I just decided I have enough. Some people should share it.”

Amy Dossett at Hideaway Salon cut the hair off Wednesday and put it in a blue bag to send to Locks of Love.

Espey said that she liked her hair, which she usually wore in a ponytail, long although she said it was “a pain” to care for.
