Shark steaks for Comic Relief

Published: March 17, 2005

Albert Pougher could not resist buying a 7ft long 20 stone mako shark - the biggest he has seen in 40 years in his profession.

And he hopes the big fish will make a big impact with Driffield street market shoppers tomorrow (Thursday) and raise around £400 for Comic Relief.

He said: “Three or four years ago I did a big halibut for auction for Children In Need. I saw this shark was up for auction and thought I could make some money for Comic Relief. I hope to raise between £300 and £400.”

Mr Pougher said he had only ever seen two mako sharks before and had never tasted a shark from British waters. But he said he had tasted them abroad and said shark had a similar taste to veal.

Mr Pougher said: “I think it will be good for people wanting to try something different.

“It is perfect with Good Friday coming up and people can try something different instead of haddock and cod.”

Mr Pougher will soon start carving up the shark into steaks of between 200 and 300 grams but he said it would be hard work.

He said: “The skin is very thick on these sharks but once you get through that it should be easy enough.”

Mako sharks are close cousins to the great white shark.
They eat schooling fish, including tuna, herring, mackerel, swordfish, and porpoise.

They are the fastest sharks of all and can reach speeds of up to 60 miles per hour.
