Teen organizes charity run for food bank

Published: March 15, 2005

The city known for its barbecue is warming up for a big race.

he Bar-B-Cue Capital of Texas 5K is Saturday, March 19. It’s a charity race organized by Scott Woody, a Lockhart High School sophomore. Proceeds will benefit the Capital Area Food Bank and tsunami relief.

News 8 Austin’s Paul Brown spoke with Woody about his unique project.

Q: Scott, I hear this run is part of an Eagle Scout project. How’d you come up with the idea?

A: Last summer I read an article in our paper about the new food bank in Caldwell County and thought there was something I could do to help. So I contacted the executive director and she explained that half their demographic – people they reach out to and help - are children. And that really got to my heart.

Q: What kind of community response have you gotten so far?

A: No one that I’ve asked so far has said no. It’s pretty amazing how many people it needs.

Q: There’s an added bonus for people who register early?

A: The first 500 people who register get free barbecue from either Black’s, Chisholm Trail, Smitty’s or Kreutze’s.
