‘Project Hope’ restored human spirit

Published: March 13, 2005

Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi, who adopted a village in Tsunami-affected Cuddalore district, today said his venture ‘Project Hope’ there had gone beyond providing just relief and rehabilitation.

“We didn’t have a single casualty, post-Tsunami, thanks to Project Hope, which we started to restore the human spirit in the affected village,” he said after accepting an honour for outstanding work at Devanampattnam, by Rotary District 3230.

Stating that the greatest casaulty of the Tsunami was not loss of property or human life, but the human spirit, he said “I realised that there was so much to be done beyond relief material and rehabilitation.

“Hence we started ‘Project Hope’ to bring back the spirit and confidence among the affected.” Oberoi said he initially thought of going to the village, staying there for a couple of days and then coming back. He did not go there with any master plan, he said.

“When I entered Devanampattnam, I saw people running behind trucks carrying relief materials. Food packets were thrown at them and were not properly distributed. The victims looked like beggars.” The actor said he was moved enough to decide that these people should be given some better treatment. “After that we ensured proper distribution of food, safe drinking water and medicines.” Oberoi said they started ‘Project Hope’ in another Tsunami-affected village, Pattinacheri, where about 430 families were affected.
