Age Related macular degeneration Could be cured

Published: March 12, 2005

AMD (Age macular degeneration) is the age related macular degeneration that is linked with genetic mutation in the human body. It is the main cause for blindness in the elder age.
Near about 15 million Americans are suffering from the disorder. The researchers believe that the genetic mutation is increasing the risk of developing Macular degeneration.

Macular degeneration is a disorder that affects the macula, which is the central part of the retina of the eye. It decreases the visual acuity and central vision.

The findings are released in the journal Science. Mr. Edwards led the research groups, at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Josephine Hoh of Yale University School of Medicine and Margaret Pericak-Vance of Duke University Medical Center.

Researchers have examined thousands of gene sequences before discovering the one linked to AMD and they found that a CFH gene is involved in the production of a protein called complement factor H that regulates the immune system. Half of the AMD cases are related to the gene variant and the risk factors for AMD are similar to those for cardiovascular illness, including obesity, lack of exercise and smoking.
