Teen’s haircut benefits Locks of Love

Published: March 9, 2005

LeaAnn Aultman of Hattiesburg got a hair cut Monday that many people someday may appreciate.

Aultman, 19, has been growing her hair for six years to donate it to Locks of Love - a non-profit organization that provides hair pieces for children who have lost their hair because of medical conditions.

“Around the time I decided to do this there were a lot of brochures and commercials for Locks of Love,” Aultman said. “My hair grows very fast, and there’s tons of it, so I just figured I could help.”

About a foot of hair was cut as Aultman sat in a stylist’s chair at Salon 38 in Hattiesburg. The hair, banded in a pony tail, was placed in an envelope addressed to the charitable organization.

Kristi Rayner, a stylist at Salon 38 for 12 years, said she has had clients who asked to send their hair to Locks of Love.

She has even made the suggestion herself.

“Sometimes I’ll have someone come in and they’ll want to get a lot cut off, and I’ll say ‘If you’re going to get this much cut off why don’t we just take another inch, and I’ll send it to Locks of Love.’ They’re usually happy to do it,” Rayner said.

Rayner said she has had five or six clients donate hair to Locks of Love since the organization was founded in 1997.

She said she keeps all the information on file and will even send the hair in for her clients.
