Dog Lost In Crash Returned To Denver

Published: February 23, 2005

Georgia trucker Alan Bevill was driving through New Mexico when he heard about a bleeding dog wandering in the desert in the middle of the night.

“This one was hurt,” Bevill said. “He was hurt pretty good. [It] looked like he’d been thrown through a windshield somewhere.”

It turned out the dog named “Buddy” had been in a crash; one that claimed owner Dan Stevenson’s life.

After Bevill treated the dog’s injuries, he drove Buddy with him back to Georgia, where he called the New Mexico State Patrol.

“I found out about the accident, I traveled down to Albuquerque the next night,” said Bill Scribner, Stevenson’s best friend. Scribner knew he would want to know what happened to the dog that was his constant companion.

“I knew he was alive at some point, because I saw footprints around the accident scene,” Scribner said.

A week later, Scribner heard about “Buddy”s rescue and got hold of Bevill in Georgia.

“I said, ‘Listen, I would more than happy to come out there and grab Buddy, you’ve gone above and beyond already,’ ” Scribner said. “And he said, ‘No, absolutely not. I will find a way to get rerouted through Denver, no matter what it takes, and I want to deliver him to you personally.’ ”

So they met Sunday afternoon, a reluctant hero and a mournful best friend.

“I’d want somebody to get my dog back to my family, because it was mine, so that’s why I did it,” Bevill said.

There followed a reluctant goodbye from a trucker whose compassion carried everyone through a remarkable long haul.

“I’m going to cry all the way to Sacramento,” Bevill said. “He’s become a good friend. I’m going to miss him. I’m going to hate it, but he’s going home.”
