Three fishermen rescued off Gloucester

Published: February 10, 2005

The Coast Guard rescued three fishermen from a sinking boat 45 miles east of Gloucester on Wednesday.

The 38-foot fishing vessel “Hollywood” radioed a mayday call just before 1:30 p.m., saying the boat was sinking and all three people on board were jumping into a life raft.

A Coast Guard helicopter flying in the Gloucester area headed toward the scene and rescued the men, identified as Richard Shatford, Lewis Mitchell and Brian Clancy, all from Gloucester.

All three were unharmed.

Shatford is the brother of the late Robert Shatford, one of six fishermen who perished in October 1991 when the Gloucester fishing boat Andrea Gail went down while swordfishing in the stormy Atlantic.

The story of the ill-fated trip of the Andrea Gail later became the subject of not only a best-selling book, but also a movie, both entitled “The Perfect Storm.”
