Man rescued from yacht

Published: February 3, 2005

A 71-year-old sailor was rescued from his yacht in the Bass Strait after its mast broke in a storm overnight.

Air police rescued the man who was alone on his 11m yacht, 58 nautical miles (107km) off Lakes Entrance on Victoria’s south-east coast, a police spokeswoman said.

She said the man was located safe and well and was being taken to Latrobe Valley Airport, in Victoria’s south-east.

Police were aware the man was in trouble last night when he reported his mast had broken.

But at the time, the man believed he would be able to sail the boat safely to shore by himself, the spokeswoman said.
