Scouts rescued from mountainous state park
Published: January 27, 2005
A North Carolina Boy Scout troop had to be rescued from a mountain in southwest Virginia after some of the boys began suffering frostbite in blizzard-like conditions.
Captain Bill Adams with the Rugby Virginia Rescue Squad says some of the boy’s shoes were so frozen the laces had to be cut off with scissors. About 25 boys and their leaders from Gaston County, North Carolina, were camping on the mountain in Grayson Highlands State Park when the big storm struck Saturday with deep snow and bitter temperatures.
Authorities say that eleven of the campers were taken to the hospital and six had to be kept overnight. Three resecuers also were treated.
