Stranded tourists rescued from flood

Published: January 24, 2005

Ten tourists have been rescued in the Whitsundays, in north Queensland, after being caught by rising floodwaters.

The State Emergency Service (SES) launched its flood boat just before 6:00pm AEST yesterday, when the tourists could not cross Cedar Creek Falls near Proserpine.

SES Whitsunday controller Mark Connors says six of the stranded tourists foolishly swam across the flooded waters.

“I certainly don’t recommend that, it’s not the time to be playing in the water,” he said.

Mr Connors says his crew managed to rescue the remaining tourists just before nightfall.

More than 350 millimetres has been dumped on the region since Friday and a severe weather warning has been issued for today.

A low has developed east of Lucinda and is slowly tracking south, parallel to the coast.

Weather forecaster Geoff Duell says the developing low will generate more heavy falls and stronger winds.

“It should be north of Bowen by this afternoon,” he said.
