Kidnapped Alabang couple rescued

Published: January 16, 2005

Ten suspected kidnappers were arrested as authorities rescued two kidnap victims following a raid on an apartment in Las Pinas City before dawn Sunday, police and military officials said.

At 2 a.m., operatives of the National Anti-Kidnapping Task Force (NAKTF) raided an apartment on 38 Birds of Paradise St. In Hanyusin Village and rescued Jeffrey Cruz, 26, and his girlfriend Katrina Schoof, 20.

³They were rescued in Las Pinas,² Metro Manila Police Director Avelino Razon Jr. said.

The two were kidnapped in front of a Starbucks cafe just outside the posh Ayala Alabang village in Muntinlupa City last Tuesday. Police said the couple’s captors demanded a 30-million-peso ransom for their release, but families of the couple alerted police to the crime.

“The information was developed into actionable intelligence by our operatives after which we immediately passed on said information to the NAKTF and PACER [Police Anti-Crime and Emergency Response],” Malabanan said .

Navy Spokesman Captain Geronimo Malabanan said a concerned citizen provided information to the Naval Intelligence Security Group (NISG) on the suspects’ lair.

Government has blamed a rash of kidnappings in Manila targeting businessmen for scaring off potential investors.

President Gloria Macapgal-Arroyo last year ordered a massive crackdown on kidnap gangs, leading to the arrests or killing of several kidnap gang leaders.
