Twins Donate Hair To ‘Locks Of Love’ Charity

Published: January 13, 2005

TIP: donating hair to Locks of Love.

Two Escondido first graders are doing all they can to help other children, and they’re doing it by donating their most precious possession – their hair.

Picture this: twin six-year-old girls who haven’t cut their hair for five years. We’re talking long hair, and it all came off today for a very good cause. Fourteen inches of hair, times two six-year-old girls equals more than enough to teach these young sister a lesson in life.

“It’s very thick, it’s got a nice texture, and it may make more than one wig because of the amount of hair that she has,” hair cutter Lydia Hikim said.

Elizabeth and Natalie Krummel are donating their hair to a charity called Locks of Love. The nonprofit collects human hair to make wigs for children going through chemotherapy.

“The people who have cancer, they have strong medicine and they take it,” Natalie Krummel said.

“Some people don’t have hair, and they put hats on them so they don’t laugh at them,” Elizabeth Krummel said.

The girls’ mother heard about Locks of Love, and encouraged them to do something positive.

“I want them to learn how to give to others, not just to receive,” Tina Ruiz said.

For Elizabeth and Natalie, it was not a hard sell.

“Sometimes when I brush my hair, it hurts and I have tangles,” Natalie said.

“It’s a lot of work to maintain hair. You have to wash it daily and brush it,” Ruiz said. “They go through three bottles of shampoo and conditioner a month, just them two alone.”

So, when it came time for the moment of truth, there were no tears, just smiles times two.

After all, the hair will grow back, but the lesson will last a lifetime.

Fantastic Sams is just one of many local salons that partners with the Locks of Love charity. You have to have at least 10 inches of hair to donate.
