Man rescued from burning house
Published: January 12, 2005
A Tasmanian police officer risked his life to save a man trapped in a house fire.
The resident of the house on Flinders Island was woken by his dog about 11.30pm (AEDT) and found a corner of his house on fire.
He failed in his attempts to fight the fire and alerted emergency services.
Police said that when Sergeant Fergus Cameron arrived at the house, it was engulfed in flames and he went in to rescue the occupant.
He was able to bring the fire under control using buckets of water before being assisted by fire crews.
Northern District divisional inspector Andrew Fogarty issued a statement commending 38-year-old Sgt Cameron’s actions.
“Had Sgt (Cameron) not responded in the time and manner in which he did, the house would have been fully engulfed in fire and we may well have had a fatality,” Inspector Fogarty said.
Sgt Cameron was admitted to Whitemark Hospital suffering significant smoke inhalation, but was discharged a short time later.
It is believed the fire started because of an electrical fault.
