Missing puppies returned

Published: January 6, 2005

Honey and Holly are home.

Days after a pair of golden retriever puppies were stolen from the yard of a Quakertown home, both have been returned unharmed, much to the relief of their owners.

The 3-month-old, light colored dogs were reunited with owners Bill and Cheryl Mehl after they were taken last Friday.

“This will be the first night sleep I get, other than three hours and waking every half hour crying,” Cheryl Mehl said on Wednesday upon hearing the news that Holly was returned to police.

Honey was returned to Quakertown police on Monday.

“They’re in great condition. They were fed and well taken care of,” said Officer Bryan Lockwood. “The officers were playing with them.”

Lockwood said the investigation is ongoing and would not identify the person or persons who turned the dogs in to police. He said theft charges may soon be filed and that numerous people may have been involved.

Lockwood did say that the same people were not keeping both puppies. The same person or persons took both dogs, but Holly was given away to someone else.

The Mehls believe someone took the puppies on Friday morning while the dogs were exercising in their fenced-in yard on Congress Court. Someone may have lifted the puppies over the fence, Bill Mehl said, because the 6-foot-high fence has a padlocked gate, but it was untouched.

“What happened was not right. It was very cruel,” said Cheryl.

Signs of “STOLEN PUPPIES! PLEASE HELP!!!” and an offer of a reward for information leading to the dogs’ return, were posted around Quakertown, as well as in Souderton and Coopersburg.

Cheryl Mehl said she is grateful to the Quakertown Police Department “for taking this seriously, for being caring and concerned.”
