Gates donates hair to Locks of Love

Published: January 6, 2005

My husband Kevin watched a program about kids with cancer and was touched after seeing a little girl receive a wig from Locks of Love, a non-profit organization, following treatments that left her bald.

We’d talked about cutting my hair before but decided this couldn’t be for a better reason, and on Wednesday, Dec. 8, I had my hair cut, donating it to Locks of Love.

I thought in order to donate your hair, it had to be all one length and you had to go to a salon participating with Locks of Love.

Here are the criteria the organization requires for donations of hair:

10″ minimum hair length (tip to tip); however, longer lengths, especially blonde, black, and red are in greatest demand.

Wigs, falls or synthetic hair is not accepted.

Please bundle hair in ponytail or braid.

Hair needs to be clean, dry, placed in a plastic bag, then padded envelope.

Hair is needed from men and women, young and old, all colors and races.

Hair may be colored or permed, but not bleached or chemically damaged (if unsure, ask your stylist).

Hair needs to swept off the floor is not usable.

Hair cut years ago is usable if it has been stored in a ponytail or braid.

Hair that is short, gray, or unsuitable for children will be separated from the ponytails and sold at fair market value to offset the cost of manufacturing.

You may pull curly hair straight to measure the minimum 10″.

The majority of all hair donated comes from children who wish to help other children.

Layered hair may be divided into multiple ponytails for donation.

Please note: Anyone can cut your hair as long as the above guidelines are followed.

The Web site includes a form to send with the donation and where to send it, along with some touching pictures of recipients of the wigs, and other ways to donate
