Over 300.000 people have returned to their areas of origin in southern Huila province over the last three years, as part of the programme of resettlement being carried out by the local Government, an official source has announced.
The local Governor, Francisco Jose Ramos da Cruz, released the information at the end of a ceremony of yearend greetings to the members of his staff, church people and representatives of political parties.
He said on the occasion that the operation has cost over one million US dollars.
Under the resettlement programme, his team intends to accommodate 5.600 war displaced people in their areas of origin.
Ramos da Cruz said he counted on the support of the United Nations Agencies, local and foreign Non-Governmental Organisations to carry out the operation that included distribution of farming tools and money.
